By the end of 1975, it’s safe to say that the early cosy idealism of John’s career had been replaced by a deep disenchantment with the industry he worked in. At times he talked about jacking it all in and claimed that there were so many rotten aspects of the business that he was in danger of losing his voice speaking out in protest. He was sick of the session musicians who would only talk about money, of the agents who were no better than leeches and the managers who boasted about ripping clients off. People were lying to him about contracts, and agencies were allegedly hanging on to money that was rightly his. From now on, he would demand cash or a cheque in his name on the night of the concert. But with a young family to feed, John couldn’t afford to turn down work. He was faced by the conundrum that doing the thing he loved so much was actually doing him great harm. Even Beverley, despite all her grievances against her ex-husband, admits that he worked bloody hard to provide for her and their children. When, in late 1975, an interviewer with Liquorice magazine told John he had done sixty dates in the UK alone that year, his response was blunt and telling.

Is it that many? No wonder I’m fuckin’ tired … it’s boring me to death … It’s lovely when you’re on the stage, right, really good when you have a play, but all the driving about the fuckin’ motorway and going to poxy hotels …
